A History of Christmas Cards, Valentines and Postcards

Lecture on Monday 1st December 2025 at 2:15PM

Lecturer: Andrew Davies
Venue: Larruperz Centre

Ever since Rowland Hill introduced the penny post in 1840, the card has been a vital form of communication in England. Popular, exuberant, lovely and sometimes a little rude too - cards provide a colourful social history of the last 150 years. We will explore who designed, sent and received them as well as touching upon their twentieth-century successor the poster.

Andrew is an Extra-Mural Tutor for London, Essex and The Open University; Author of 9 books, including The East End Nobody Knows. He is a frequent contributor to radio and television; has lectured all over the world; and organises walks to complement his lectures.
