East Window

EAST WINDOW

Stonework: A window of six lights: the main lights are three lancets with three large cinquefoil lights above, and six triangular eyelets, four large and two small.
The sill is obscured by the centre reredos.

Window Schematic

Eyelets (7), (8) and (9) (7) The top cinquefoil shows Christ facing forward. His right hand is raised in the Latin blessing configuration and his left hand holds an orb. Both hands show marks of the crucifixion.

(8) A group of four Angels facing to the right. Three Angels in the front line are kneeling and looking upwards towards the central figure, the hands of the Angel in the middle being held out in supplication. Only the head, wing and nimbus are visible of the fourth Angel, who is looking towards a light.

The background is red with a foliate design with a white star on either side, both partially obscured by the group of figures. Below the angels are areas of purple and pale blue with cloud-like shapes painted on them.

(9) is broadly similar to (8), the four Angels facing right towards the centre.

Main Lights (10) – (12) CRUCUIFIXION

(10) The figure of the Virgin Mary, depicted as an old lady facing right with her eyes cast down and her head inclined slightly forward. She stands with her fingers interlaced. She has a red nimbus with rays leading to a narrow band on small black roundels. She wears a white wimple and a white veil draped over her head and just covering her shoulders. She wears a white long-sleeved gown that falls to the ground in folds, a mid-blue cloak and probably red shoes.

Beneath the figure is the first part of an inscription "JESUS THAT HE MIGHT SANCTIFY" in yellow Lombardic capitals. Above the figure are four trees with oak like leaves.

(11) The depiction of Corpus Christi fills the entire main section of glass and runs up to the top of the lancet. Christ is nailed to the cross, his body is inclined to the right and his head is falling slightly forward. He has a very pale green perizonium wrapped around his waist, held up by an ochre rope visible centre front and otherwise hidden by folded-over cloth.

The cross is dark green and closely cross-hatched. Over the hatching are eight-petal flowers with black roundel centres alternating with pairs of small plain roundels. At the top of the cross is a thin white rod holding up a curved scroll titulus, white on the reverse. On the front in white Lombardic capitols on a black background is the sacred monogram I.N.R.I.

At the foot of the cross are two angels, one to the right and one to the left. Both are in profile and are kneeling, looking upwards at the crucified Christ. Beneath the whole scene is the second part of the inscription with the words "THE PEOPLE WITH HIS OWN BLOOD".

(12) The figure of St. John the Evangelist stands facing slightly left with his head sorrowfully downwards. He is depicted as a young apostle with his right arm down by his side and his left held across his breast. His long-sleeved robe is pink, full length and has a yellow band at the neck, and he is swathed in a green cloak, draped over his left shoulder. Beneath him is the final part of the inscription "SUFFERED WITHOUT THE GATE". Above is a repetition of the four oak like trees.
