Highlights of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery Chinese Collections

Senior Curator of Visual Arts at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Kate Newnham, will give an exclusive bespoke tour of the Asian Gallery, which includes world-class examples Chinese and Japanese art.

Kate will introduce the important Schiller Collection of Chinese Art, bequeathed to Bristol in 1946 with its many refined and subtle ceramics of the Tang (618-960), Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. The tour will also introduce Bristol’s rare collection of Chinese glass including imperial pieces influenced by Jesuit craftsmen at the court in Beijing. Other highlights will be a recent display ‘The Art of Japanese Porcelain’ showcasing Japanese ceramics from the Irene Finch Collection, Chinese landscape jades from the Whitaker Collection and striking examples of contemporary Chinese ceramics and glass.

Kate Newnham has worked at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery for many years where she leads the team of art curators. She has presented regular talks and lectures on Asian art including for the Oriental Ceramic Society, the School of Oriental and African Studies and Christie’s Education. Prior to Bristol she worked at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Following morning refreshments and tour, there will be free time to either explore the museum or Bristol's eateries and other attractions.

Timings: Pick ups from Hereford Merton Meadow Car Park at 8:30am and Ross On Wye Wilton Road 9:05am, Edde Cross Street 9:10am & Ross Coop 9:15am Depart and arrive Ross approximately 5:30pm, and Hereford at 6:15pm
